Apply upstream fixes to core-1.7

Alejandro Homs Puron requested to merge fix_core-1.7 into core-1.7

The following patches has been already merged to the master branch. Most of these changes are needed for the SlsDetector plugin.

Note:Special care has been taken to ensure backward binary compatibility. In particular, the lock count in AutoLock was declared as char (instead of int in master branch) in order to fit the previous boolean field.
